Formula Shortage Update

The recall of certain Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare infant formulas has caused a shortage of powdered formulas that is affecting many families.

As you navigate the shortage, here are some things to keep in mind and resources to help locate formula.

  • You should not water down formula, try to make formula at home, or use toddler formula to feed infants. It will not have the nutrients your baby needs.
  • Don’t discard formula unless it is expired or is part of the recall. Check your formula’s lot code to see whether or not it was affected by the recall. Visit the Similac website for complete information.
  • Call your OBGYN or pediatrician to see if they have in-office samples or can suggest a similar formula that may be more readily available in stores and is nutritionally similar to your infant’s typical formula.

If you are a Mid-Shore WIC participant, please call us at (410) 479-8060 to discuss what formula options are available to you.

Non-WIC participants can use the formula finder tools located on the Department of Health and Human Services website.

Liquid Formulas

If you are issued a concentrate or ready-to-feed (RFT) formula as an alternative, be aware that they have different use instructions. Both are liquid formulas, but they are very different. It is important to know how to use the liquid formula you are issued correctly for your baby’s safety and nutritional needs.

  • Concentrate formulas must be diluted with a 1 to 1 ratio of water. For example, if the baby drinks a 4-ounce bottle, mix 2 ounces of concentrate formula with 2 ounces of water.
  • Ready-to-feed (RFT) formulas can be used straight from the container and do not need to be mixed or altered in any way.

If you have questions about a new formula you were issued and need help understanding how to use it correctly, call our office at (410) 479-8060.
